When success of a product is concerned, we often find that the manufacturing process plays as important a part as the finished product itself.

When a new customer approached us requesting our assistance in developing an alternative medium-volume axle which must strictly adhere to specified ride performance characteristics, it was made clear that the previous solution was failing. However, the current solution they had was adequate in principle, yet an unreliable supplier had adversely affected reliability and had severely increased lead times.

Solution:
We reviewed the current solution through a series of dynamic tests which enabled us to produce a “load/deflection” curve. With this information we were successfully able to replicate the performance of the previous solution. This was made possible because of the expertise and understanding of Peak Dynamics engineers, alongside an ongoing investment in test equipment.

Our engineers didn’t just replicate the old solution – they modified the geometry of the piece parts of one of our proven solutions, as well as the material composition of the integral rubber chord to produce the perfect solution. In order to ensure that the products longevity had also not been adversely affected, a wear acceleration test was carried out covering 100,000 cycles. Combining the data for our proven solution with a full duty cycle test, the customer now has full confidence that not only was he now able to buy an axle with the same characteristics of the original but also that the longevity of the product is now well proven.

This new solution, delivered on-time, with our usual high standards of quality control, ensure that this customer (who sells many hundreds of this trailer type per year and many axle replacements alongside them) now have an improved product that they can deliver on time and be sure that the axle units will no longer be a weakness.
