We often encounter customers who demand unrivalled reliability, long service life and no maintenance, however for this customer, the suspension units required would be sacrificial, yet integral, to the unit it was fitted to.

Our customer produces vehicles for use in theatres of war and developed one specifically for mine clearance purposes, specifically aimed at protecting heavy vehicles and tanks, which are often left exposed because conventional methods of detection cannot detect mines that are buried well below the surface of the ground. The principle behind this vehicle is the ability to mimic the load register of a heavy vehicle or tank and then detonate any mines whilst containing them safely within their force and after mine containment modules.

Solution:
Our task was to develop a range of damper units which would act as blast suppressors. Their cumulative effect would recreate the load register of the target vehicles. This has to be achieved within a given physical size of the units and at a determined costs given they are effectively sacrificial i.e. they are destroyed when a mine is detected.

We began by testing high-density rubber insert suspension units due to their low cost and value for money. When these were found to be adequate for the job, engineers began manipulating the characteristics of the casing and rubber contained within, to precisely achieve the load register and deflection characteristics set out in the customer’s specification. These units then underwent rigorous CAD/CAM modelling prototyping and testing. They have now been fully tested by both the UK and USA military and sales are also expected in war theatres such as Afghanistan as well as other trouble spots throughout the world in which anti-tank explosives are commonplace.
