Home >Case Studies >Agriculture >Crop Spraying: Preventing Catastrophic Failure

After incurring significant wear to agricultural machinery, a solution was needed to prevent catastrophic failure.

The effect of torque upon mechanical joints can often be highly destructive – reducing the service life of an often vital machine. This is highly pronounced in the agricultural world where machinery is very rarely operated on smooth roads or in easy to traverse environments. When a customer approached us requiring a solution to some heavy torque wear to their valuable crop sprayers, we engineered the perfect solution to prevent torque wear at the point of contact.

The issue highlighted by the customer was, in fact, a very complex array of problems and limitations – both spatially and budgetary. The torque damping solution sought, needed to provide an effective damping capability to a lengthy boom arm, whilst being mechanically fastened into a relatively small space and all of this be made available at a modest cost. Other requirements included a long service life and easy change out and maintenance if required, due to the importance of minimising maintenance downtime.

Solution

We began by consulting the detailed technical specification provided by the customer, producing expert analysis regarding the load deflection, physical size and rubber characteristics and determined that a semi bonded rubber suspension unit would fulfil the specification, without incurring unnecessary costs to the customer. This meant that the solution was not unnecessarily over engineered, but gave the customer a solution which would solve the specific problem stated . Semi bonded rubber suspension units were then built to the exact specification suggested by our engineers and agreed with the customer. Once delivered and installed the customer noted the improvement they felt had been achieved in extending the service life of their crop sprayers and that the benefits of fitting the semi bonded rubber suspension unit - the extended useful life of their crop sprayers and potentially reduced future maintenance costs, outweighed the modest implementation cost incurred.
